What it does

uv is Astral's Rust-based Python package and project manager. It brings environment creation, dependencies, Python versions and command-line tools into one workflow. The practical aim of this guide is reproducibility: another developer should be able to reconstruct a project environment.

Evidence rather than hype

We checked the official repository and documentation. Total stars are not a measure of recent growth, and we do not yet have comparable snapshots for star velocity. This is an editorial selection based on usefulness, not a verified trending ranking.

Requirements and installation

The PyPI route needs a terminal and a compatible Python installation. Official documentation also provides standalone installers and package-manager options. These commands follow the documented PyPI method; they were not executed for this article.

pip install uv
uv --version

A first project

Start in a new directory rather than overwriting an existing project. The documented project workflow includes these commands.

uv init example
cd example
uv add ruff
uv run ruff check
uv lock
uv sync

Check the outcome

Inspect pyproject.toml and uv.lock, check the selected Python version and run your tests. A successful installation does not prove that every dependency works. Rebuild from the same lockfile in CI and record the tool version.

Benefits and trade-offs

Combining tasks and sharing a dependency cache can simplify daily work. Performance claims belong to the project authors; ReposNews has not benchmarked them. Before migration, test private indexes, native dependencies and your deployment pipeline.

Alternatives

pip with virtual environments may be sufficient for a small project; Poetry offers a different project-management approach. Use a pilot before replacing a working setup. The repository offers MIT or Apache-2.0 licensing; consult the original texts and review dependency licenses separately.

Sources and methodology

Official sources checked on the stated date. We do not claim growth without historical data or installations that have not been run.
