What it is

FastAPI is a Python framework for building APIs. It uses type annotations and provides interactive documentation. A small endpoint that accepts a request and returns data is a useful starting point; there is no need to split an entire application into services.

Where it helps

Try a read endpoint, inspect its response and use generated documentation to explore its contract. This example deliberately excludes databases, authentication and payments.

Evidence and signals

We checked the official repository and tutorial. Historical stars are not star velocity. Releases and activity can be recorded by the discovery pipeline, but they do not prove software quality or security.

Installation

The tutorial recommends a virtual environment and the standard dependency set. Check its current minimum Python version before proceeding. These commands were not executed as part of writing this article.

python -m pip install "fastapi[standard]"

First route

Save this example as main.py, then start the development server described in the documentation.

from fastapi import FastAPI
app = FastAPI()
@app.get('/')
def read_root():
    return {'message': 'Hello'}
fastapi dev main.py

Check it manually

Open the local address shown in the terminal, then visit /docs. Confirm the response matches your contract and try invalid inputs on your own route. Interactive documentation does not mean that the API is secured.

Benefits and limits

Types and schemas make expectations explicit. Business logic, permissions and testing remain project responsibilities. A development server is not a production deployment: review authentication, validation, secrets, rate limits, logging and error handling before exposing it.

Alternatives

Flask or Django may be a better fit for an existing application or a broader set of requirements. Evaluate the team's needs before migrating. The repository uses MIT licensing; also check dependencies and services you add.

Sources and methodology

Official sources checked on the stated date. We do not claim growth without historical data or installations that have not been run.
